SCREENPLAY UPDATE

The screenplay for Hit & Run is finished in draft form and is currently being edited. It is seven episodes–with the seventh episode being a “double” episode and conclusion to the story. Several changes were made to Jake’s background in order to make the screen version (1) more palatable for an audience that might not be as into sci-fi, and (2) create a story that begins at the same place–(i.e. Jake being declared dead and needing a new job that leads to him becoming a private detective)–yet without the background required to understand the situation.

For the readers of the Cataclysm Series, there is a natural flow to things, with World War III driving the respective plots and settings. At the end of First Life After: Resurrection, Jake dies and is brought back to life by his shaman mentor, Huemac, out in the Arizona desert. The war ends, and all of Jake’s loved ones believe him dead (as he believes of them). His months of physical and spiritual training with Huemac eventually lead him back home, where he finds his job gone and his circumstances changed–all of which lead him to taking a school security job that subsequently leads to his entry into the world of private investigation.

BOOK VS. SCREENPLAY PLOT: For those who did not read the Cataclysm Series, I had to create a rationale for Jake to be declared dead and come back. In the screenplay, Jake is called in by his old Special Operations commander to do a rescue mission as a personal favor. It’s an off-the-books op with a rag-tag group of commandos. In the end, the mission is a success, but Jake is captured, imprisoned, and disavowed by the American government, who declares him dead. While Jake is behind bars in a foreign country, he befriends Huemac, an aged Native American and another political prisoner. Huemac mentors him in the prison yard on everything from Aikido to meditation to spiritual enlightenment.

Almost a year later, covid-19 explodes onto the world scene, and countries begin shutting down everything. They also begin releasing foreign prisoners and sending them home, so Huemac and Jake are flown back to the United States. Jake, being declared dead, finds his wife has moved on without him and his sons away in college. He has nowhere to go, so he returns to Huemac’s desert home and renews his training. Later he returns home to Emmitsburg to try and reclaim a piece of his life, and lands back in Hunters Run High School–but this time as a security officer. There Principal Chris Lash and Deputy Matt Miller set Jake up with his new jobs…and now we return to the regular plot of Hit & Run.

In the screenplay we will still see a return of Boo Andrews and Chris McNally, but their back stories are changed to be compatriots who served with Jake on the rescue mission. In the end, it all ties in nicely with the normal flow of the book, and the villainous Church of Many Blessings returns as a sinister nemesis to our hero.

Once Hit & Run–the screenplay–is done the editing process, then begins the process of finding a place to send it–which will be an entirely different challenge indeed!

Newest Mystery Underway!

The newest Jake Fisher Mystery is underway: “Blood on the Bars.” Jake’s eldest son, Vinny, has been working at a zoo in southern Pennsylvania. When animals begin missing from the zoo, Vinny calls his sleuthing dad to lend his perspective to the case. Jake and Wendy join Vinny in trying to track down the reasons for the animals’ disappearances. As they close in on a perpetrator, a dead body turns up, and things get serious quickly. As Jake delves deeper and deeper into the case, he finds a trail that leads to an international smuggling ring. Jake will need to call in the aid of his Green Beret son, Tommy, to help track the bad guys all the way back to their source. It’s a family affair for Jay Vielle’s 10th novel (4th mystery). Hoping for a late Spring 2026 release. Stay tuned!!

Latest Project–a Jake Fisher miniseries screenplay

So…after nine novels, I thought I’d try my hand at another genre. I admit to knowing very little about script writing or screenplays–but thanks to advice from my son, Alex (educated at the Academy for Media Production in Pennsylvania), I’ve been able to cobble together something that looks reasonably similar to a miniseries screenplay. I decided to go with the Jake Fisher Mysteries as a place to start–specifically “Hit & Run”-Jake’s first foray into detective work.

The challenge I immediately encountered was trying to work around the back-story, previously set up over six novels in the Cataclysm Series. I don’t know that I’d call the Cataclysm Series honest-to-God “Science Fiction.” Nor is it post-apocalyptic in the truest sense. Setting a series in the first days after World War III begins doesn’t quite make it Sci-Fi. (The zombie-like mutates might, on the other hand). That said, it’s not everybody’s cup of tea, and delving into crime-drama / mystery is enough of a challenge without adding the WWIII scenario. So I had to find a way to get Jake into his current circumstances: presumed / declared dead, no teaching job, no way to make money.

CHANGING JAKE’S STORY-– As an avid Marvel comic book fan, I was elated to see the first movie forays by the MCU. Back in the 1970’s when I was a kid, there just wasn’t enough CGI or media tech to handle it. But with decades of back stories–Marvel had to make some tough calls on movie plots altering the printed canon. Some, I thought, were actually improvements on the original stories. I’m hoping I can do the same.

In this screen version of Hit & Run, we bounce back and forth with the use of flashbacks. As a classroom teacher in 2020, Jake gets a call from his old C.O., now a general (Roberson) who has a big favor to ask. The general’s family is trapped at the embassy in the fictional country of San Sebastián, where civil unrest has made travel impossible. Yet the general is forbidden by his superiors to send a team down to rescue those in the embassy due to a sticky political situation. So Gen. Roberson asks Jake to take a rag-tag team of misfits (promised forgiveness of crimes and expunging of military records) to do an off-the-books rescue mission. Jake accepts. The mission succeeds, but Jake is captured. He is disavowed and declared officially dead by the USA. As he sits in prison, he befriends an old Aztec shaman, Huemac, who has also been imprisoned. Huemac teaches him aikido as well as imparting some philosophical knowledge, and they become friends. Then covid hits–and everything shuts down. Months pass, and then–like many countries–San Sebastián is desperate to send home potentially infectious foreigners. Jake goes home to find out his wife, Laura, presumed him dead and was about to remarry–when she contracts covid and dies. Jake is legally unable to get his declaration of death reversed (something which in the real world actually has some precedent)–and in desperation he goes to Arizona to seek advice his friend and mentor, Huemac. Huemac resumes Jake’s physical and spiritual training.

Fast forward to the present–(this part will sound very familiar)–and Jake is offered a job at his old high school as a security officer working with deputy sheriff and SRO Matt Miller. Miller throws him some side work as a detective working subcontracted by the sheriff’s department. Enter Jake Fisher, private eye! The rest unfolds much as the novel does, with help from Boo Andrews and Chris McNally, all aiding in the battle against the dangerous Church of Many Blessings; its pastor, Joseph Clarque; and the powerful and mysterious money-man behind it all.

THE MINI-SERIES–I am thinking right now of maybe eight to ten episodes, each somewhere around 45 minutes long. I include clips from First Lives After: Resurrection as well as some new scenarios with Jake learning from Huemac in a prison exercise yard. I’m hoping that folks will enjoy this, and that readers and fans of the series will forgive the changes I felt I had to make. What happens after it’s finished? Great question. I have a few contacts (very few) in show biz whose advice I will ask and follow. Until then, cross your fingers and wish me luck!

NEXT BLOG POST— a character analysis of the new villain in “Badger Investigations“– Pavel Marmalyukov–an Eastern European mob boss who moonlights as a realtor in southern Pennsylvania.

“Badger Investigations” Underway!

Book 2 of the Jake Fisher MysteriesBadger Investigations–is underway and the rough draft is currently about half complete. A late spring publication is anticipated–hopefully just in time for Summer readers.

The second of Jake’s first-person narration crime drama stories begins in September, with Jake fresh off of his first case (in 2023’s Hit & Run–published last Fall) and walking with a confident swagger. Classes are about to begin for the first time since the war, and Jake is warming up to his new position as Security Officer at Hunter’s Run High School. Soon he is approached by a colleague, Kelly Fryer, who needs Jake to do a rush snoop job and get pictures of her philandering husband so that she can file for divorce before Maryland’s no fault divorce laws go into effect. Jake begrudgingly accepts the job, only to find out that Kelly’s husband, Ken, is in much deeper trouble than previously imagined. Jake must avoid getting entangled in Ken’s issues with a biker gang and an Eastern European mobster while somehow getting incriminating pictures of Ken’s adulterous relationship under a tight deadline.

In addition to his troublesome case, Jake finds leaping over obstacles at his new job equally demanding. HRHS Principal Chris Lash warns Jake to keep his private investigation business far away from campus, and later an altercation with a problem student leads to his temporary suspension. With his two worlds crashing in around him, Jake must find a way to keep it all together before he loses everything.

Badger Investigations is the second in what hopes to be a long line of Jake Fisher Mysteries, all set in the rolling northern hills of Maryland’s Frederick County. Stay tuned and look for them on Amazon!
